Grasses, Reeds, and Sedges of Wetlands Ecosystems of Peten
This bibliography began when we found Typha all around the edges of rivers, lakes, and lagoons in the Municipio de Livingston, Izabal. Now we have been asked to also make lists of flora, fauna and biodiverse ecosystems of the Reserva de la Biosfera Maya of Peten, and we found lots of Typha at the west end of Lake Peten Itza in May 2021. That same week there were no grasses, reeds or sedges remaining around 90% of Lake Yaxha; because the water level has risen so far all the lake edge plants that we noticed in 2018 and 2019 are now flooded out. But since our project is now for five years, we hope to find shore plants as the water recedes in future years (though of course the water may rise even further).
Grasses, Reeds, and Sedges of Wetlands Ecosystems of Municipio de Livingston and Wetlands of Peten
Most field work in botany is on trees, so most national parks have a larger list of trees than a list of any other kind of plant. We at FLAAR (USA) and FLAAR Mesoamerica (Guatemala) are also making lists of grasses, sedges, and rushes.
The first edition is focused on all the grasses, reeds, and sedges that we found in the marshes and edges of swamps and lakes of the Municipio de Livingston, Izabal, Guatemala. But then we found more along the western end of Lake Peten Itza in May 2021, while initiating our 5-year project of coordination and cooperation with CONAP for the Reserva de la Biosfera Maya (RBM).
We will be preparing a FLAAR report in pdf format with an updated expanded edition of this bibliography for our Reserva de la Biosfera Maya project, especially since many wetlands plants are edible (and are missing from most lists of plants eaten by the Mayan people).
